Taliban frees US soldier

A US soldier held prisoner for five years by the Taliban and freed in exchange for the release of five Afghan detainees at Guantanamo Bay arrived at a German medical centre for treatment on Sunday, a US defense official said SIA reports.

Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, 28, arrived at Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Sunday that Bergdahl's "safety and health were both in jeopardy'' and that US officials had to act quickly to secure his release. Hagel was speaking while on a surprise trip to Kabul.

The only US soldier held by the Taliban, Bergdahl was handed over to US special forces Saturday evening local time in an area of eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.

The handover followed secret and indirect negotiations between the United States and the Taliban, with the government of Qatar serving as the go-between.
