Twelve protesters have been arrested at an immigration demonstration in the US city of Chicago, just hours before Barack Obama’s visit there.
Eight females and four males from the Immigration Youth Justice League were arrested outside the Chicago Hilton hotel in the US state of Illinois on Wednesday morning, after they locked arms and blocked traffic in an act of civil disobedience.
The protesters also displayed banners and placards expressing disapproval of Obama’s aggressive deportation policies including a White House quota that aims to deport roughly 400,000 people in 2013.
Rights groups and activists have expressed concerns that a reform plan will bring new pressures on illegal immigrants.
Public support for immigration reform has been steadily mounting, with protest rallies routinely held up in major cities across the United States.
On any given day, there are 33,000 people detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who spend an average of 26.5 days behind bars. In 2011, ICE deported nearly 400,000 people, with an annual cost of USD 1.7 billion to hold immigrants.
