After Azerbaijan regained independence, the country attained sustainable socioeconomic development thanks to its policy.

The statement came from Minister of Economic Development Shahin Mustafayev.

He was speaking at the international conference titled "20th anniversary of independence: achievements and difficulties on the way to progressive, fair and dynamic statehood".

The minister said that by joining a range of transnational projects, the country took a worthy place in the world.

"In the first years of our independence, the political crisis and fact of occupation deepened socioeconomic crisis and made it uncontrolled. In such conditions, Heydar Aliyev who returned to power at the request of the people recovered the self-confidence of the people and laid a foundation for economic and political development in the country".

Mustafayev said that within a short period of time due to passage to market economy, the legislative basis was created and the start was given to economic reforms.

"In 2001 Azerbaijan joined the resolution signed by the state leaders in the summit on millennium challenges.. This envisaged the twofold decrease in poverty rate in the world and specified eight global challenges by 2015".

The minister stressed that the first of them was the twofold decrease in poverty and famine.

"In 2003-2005 a program of poverty reduction was adopted in connection with our commitment within the framework of the millennium summit and the macroeconomic stability was preserved in the country, as a result. Steps were taken to tackle social problems, reduce poverty and in 2001 49% poverty rate was reduced to 29.3%".

He noted that the state program for reduction of poverty and sustainable development for 2008-2015 was adopted in Azerbaijan on 15 September 2008.

"It envisaged the twofold decrease in poverty. New achievements have been made in socioeconomic development over the past years. Economic development has entered a new phase. Despite the global financial and economic crisis, Azerbaijan managed to continue developing.

Compared to 2003, in 2010, gross domestic product saw a threefold and nonoil sector twofold increase. Over the past period, the revenues of the population have increased by 4.5 times, average monthly salary by 4.3 times, people’s deposits by 12 times.
