Milli Majlis appeals to other parliaments over 33rd anniversary of Khojaly genocide

Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis has issued appeals to the heads of working groups on relations with foreign parliaments, chairmen of international committees of parliaments and international parliamentary organizations on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.

The appeals state that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces attacked the city of Khojaly and razed it to the ground overnight. A total of 613 civilians, including 106 women, 63 children and a 70 elderly, were brutally murdered due to their ethnic affiliation. Eight families were completely destroyed, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one parent. The victims were treated with unprecedented cruelty. Another 1,275 residents of Khojaly were taken hostage. The fate of 150 of them, including 68 women and 26 children, is still unknown.

Although the organizers of this act of genocide were the political and state leadership of the Republic of Armenia, its direct perpetrators were members of the Armenian armed forces, Armenian terrorist groups and servicemen of the 366th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the former Soviet Army located in Khankandi.

The appeals note that after Azerbaijan ended the 30-year Armenian occupation and restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Large-scale restoration and reconstruction work is being carried out in all the liberated territories, including Khojaly. Like the residents of other regions, the population of Khojaly, who have begun to return to their native lands, will also live in peace and security in their homes.

However, the victims of the Khojaly genocide are still waiting for justice. Unfortunately, Armenia refuses to bring the perpetrators of this massacre and numerous other war crimes to justice. This inaction by Armenia and its failure to take any action regarding the atrocities it has committed are a clear violation of international law. They reinforce impunity and pose a serious threat to the long-awaited peace and stability in the region.

The appeals emphasize that the Khojaly genocide is a crime not only against the Azerbaijani people but also against all humanity. The strong condemnation of this genocide by the civilized world can help prevent such crimes in the future.
