Committee Against Torture conducts monitoring at State Security Service's detention center

Chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee Against Torture Tural Huseynov, his deputy Elchin Shirinov, and lawyer Rovshan Mammadov conducted monitoring at the temporary detention center and pre-trial detention center of the State Security Service.

Tural Huseynov told Report that the purpose of the monitoring was to monitor the detention conditions, the rules of treatment for detainees, and the provision of food and medicines, etc.:

"During the visit, meetings were held with persons of Armenian origin accused of committing war crimes held in the detention center, 6 persons accused of attempted terrorism held in the Gusar district, Azer Baghirov, who was brought to Azerbaijan from Jordan on a wanted list, Ilkin Gambarova, who was accused of treason, and other detainees. These persons did not complain about the conditions of detention or the treatment they received. All cells are equipped with TV sets and radio. They can meet with their lawyers comfortably. Detainees are provided with the opportunity to talk on the phone for 15 minutes twice a week and can meet with family members. They can also use the gym and library comfortably. They are provided with opportunities to meet with their lawyers. All food sent from home is provided to the detainees."

Tural Huseynov noted that since the detention center was recently renovated, the conditions have further improved there: "All rooms have ventilation. Each cell has its own bathroom and toilet. Detainees are taken outdoors every day at appropriate times."
