On September 18, 2026, a masterclass on “Fetal Medicine” was held at the Central Customs Hospital, organized by the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee, the Central Customs Hospital, the Scientific-Practical and Training Center, and the British-Azerbaijani Association of Doctors and Dentists.
The event was attended by Deputy Head of the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine Ismayil Afandiyev; Deputy Head of the Central Customs Hospital Nahida Mahmudova; Head of the British-Azerbaijani Association of Doctors and Dentists, Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital in the United Kingdom, Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine Fidan Israfil-Beyli; Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fetal Medicine in the United Kingdom Mark Kilby; as well as obstetricians and gynecologists, radiologists and resident doctors.
In his welcoming remarks, Deputy Head of the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee Ismayil Afandiyev noted that fetal medicine is one of the important areas of modern obstetric and gynecological practice. He emphasized the importance of protecting maternal and fetal health, detecting potential abnormalities in fetal development at an early stage, and applying modern diagnostic approaches.
Deputy Head Ismayil Afandiyev noted that holding a masterclass on fetal medicine contributes to expanding the exchange of experience among specialists, enhancing professional knowledge in this field, learning from international experience, and integrating advanced methods into local medical practice.
The masterclass was moderated by Fidan Israfil-Beyli, Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital in the United Kingdom. Professor Mark Kilby, Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Fetal Medicine in the United Kingdom, delivered a presentation entitled “From Ultrasound Findings to Clinical Decision-Making: Complex Fetal Cases.”
The masterclass covered complex cases in fetal medicine, clinical decision-making based on ultrasound findings, fetal therapy and surgical interventions. Real clinical cases were presented during the event, followed by interactive discussions.
It should be noted that learning from international experience in fetal medicine and applying modern medical approaches are of significant importance for protecting maternal and fetal health, expanding the capabilities of prenatal diagnosis, and strengthening the professional training of specialists in the management of complex clinical cases.
