Elnur Mammadov highlights key areas of cooperation with Suriname

Azerbaijan has identified energy, fossil fuels, renewable energy, agriculture, and education as key areas for cooperation with Suriname, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov said in an interview with local television during his visit to Suriname.

"We are exploring opportunities for Surinamese students to study at Azerbaijan’s leading universities and strengthening cooperation between higher education institutions in both countries. Additionally, trade in oil and LNG remains a priority, which is why SOCAR representatives are part of our delegation. Economic and business prospects are also under discussion, with representatives from Azerbaijan’s Small and Medium Business Development Agency (SMBDA) participating in the visit to explore ways to expand cooperation between the business sectors of both nations," Mammadov noted.

According to him, the primary goal of the trip is an exploratory mission following agreements reached between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi at COP29.

"We hope that by the end of the visit, we will identify the most promising areas of cooperation and develop a strategy for its further expansion," Mammadov added.

He also highlighted that this year marks the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Suriname.

"We are committed to strengthening the cooperation that we have developed over the years within international organizations. Now is the perfect time to deepen our bilateral ties," Mammadov emphasized.

The first inter-ministerial political consultations took place as part of the Azerbaijani government delegation’s visit to Suriname from March 3-5. The sides discussed prospects for bilateral and multilateral relations, as well as cooperation in green energy, investment, transport, education, and culture. The delegation included representatives from the ministries of economy, energy, science, education, and agriculture, along with officials from SOCAR and AzerGold.
