The United States will immediately increase tariffs against Canada if Ottawa imposes reciprocal measures on American goods, US President Donald Trump said, SİA informs via TASS.
"Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada [Prime Minister Justin Trudeau], that when he puts on a retaliatory tariff on the US, our reciprocal tariff will immediately increase by a like amount," Trump wrote on his Truth Social page.
Earlier, Trudeau announced that the US had started a trade war against Canada, while Ottawa had imposed reciprocal tariffs against Washington. Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against 155 billion Canadian dollars ($107.4 billion) worth of American goods, starting with tariffs on 30 billion Canadian dollars worth of goods on March 4, and tariffs on the remaining 125 billion Canadian dollars of American products within 21 days, he said, adding that Canadian tariffs would remain in force until the US lifts its levies.
Moreover, Ottawa has filed a claim at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the introduction of the US increased tariffs on Canadian goods, and the country would also try to resolve the situation through the trilateral US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
