Azerbaijani Parliament holds special session on Independence Day
The Azerbaijani Parliament is holding a special session on occasion of 20th anniversary of independence.

Speaker Oqtay Asadov opened the session that began with the national anthem of Azerbaijan.

Congratulating MPs and Azerbaijani people on the Independence Day, he noted that 18 October marks a landmark date in life of both the country and people.

"The Azerbaijani people who lived independent for just 23 months at the beginning of the last century got such an opportunity again at the end of the century. The independence was restored on 18 October 1991 and Constitutional act was adopted."

The Azerbaijani state and people faced very hardships in the first years of independence, Asadov added.

"Azerbaijan faced almost the same problem it faced back in 1918. Both periods witnessed Armenian aggression. There was incompetence and lack of rule in early 1991 and the state independence was under threat. Only Heydar Aliyev could save the independence.

Heydar Aliyev eliminated a threat for our independence upon return to power in 1993. Azerbaijan embarked on a successful path of development. Successful domestic and foreign policies of Heydar Alliyev were continued by President Ilham Aliyev. Independence is a wealth of every Azerbaijani citizen."

Following the speaker’s speech, the MPs watched a film depicting the path Azerbaijan covered in the past 20 years.
