Alarza and Reid shine at ITU World Triathlon

Fernando Alarza and Aileen Reid both finished in the top four at the ITU World Triathlon competition in London last weekend. The athletes can be reassured of their medal prospects on the plane to Baku 2015 with solid performances behind them.

Spain's Alarza picked up his best result of the season, finishing second behind Great Britain's Alistair Brownlee, who won in a time of 50 minutes 39 seconds, 12 seconds ahead of Alarza.

The Spaniard, who must now prepare for the Baku 2015 European Games, has finished in the top eight of all five ITU World triathlons this year, with his previous best result a fourth place in Auckland. The men's race also saw another Baku-bound triathlete in action, with Andrea Salvisberg finishing in 13th place.

The women's race was won by Gwen Jorgensen of the United States, who claimed her 10th straight WTS title.

Ireland's Aileen Reid finished fourth behind an all-American podium as she continues to improve this season. After opening the year with a 24th-place finish in Abu Dhabi, Reid was 15th in Auckland, seventh in Gold Coast and sixth in Yokohama. Reid must now shift her focus to reaching the podium at the European Games.

The only other Baku qualifier in the top 15 of the women's race was the Netherlands' Rachel Klamer, who finished 13th.
