The German Volleyball Federation (DVV) hired Mr. Luciano Pedullà to help rebuild the women's Volleyball team with his first major tournament being the Baku 2015 European Games.
The Italian Pedullà takes over from Giovanni Guidetti, who stepped down as the German coach in January.
"Following a thorough selection process, we are very pleased to have won an experienced coach like Luciano Pedullà, who has not only convinced us on human terms and on his self-understanding as a coach, but whose appointment was also supported by the women's national team," said DVV President Mr. Thomas Krohne.
"We are now ready to focus together on the challenging task of qualifying for the Olympic Games. From our point of view, we are perfectly positioned for this purpose."
Mr. Pedullà said he was honoured with the new position. "My engagement as coach of the German national team is an honour and obligation at the same time. My aim is for the German team to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio. I believe this is a realistic goal and I want to work on it together with the team in a motivated, consequent and focused manner," Mr. Pedullà said.
"The German national team is respected internationally and comes with a great work culture, which I highly appreciate. I am looking forward to the collaboration with the team and my new challenging task."
Mr. Krohne also said Mr. Pedullà was chosen because of his ability to develop young talent.
"By choosing Luciano Pedullà, we have also won a coach whose expertise lies in the sporting development of younger players. As a result, we have laid a crucial foundation to rejuvenate our national team," added Mr. Krohne.
Mr. Pedullà, who is 57 years old, is currently coaching the Italian A1 league club Igor Gail Volley Novara and will take over his duties in May. In 2005, he served as assistant coach of the Italian women's national team which ranked second at the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix and the European Championship. He was the head coach when Italy won the European Junior Championship title in 2004.
Germany's women's team was drawn into Group B of play at Baku 2015 with Russia, Serbia, Netherlands, Croatia and Belgium.
