Competition during the parliamentary election campaign in Azerbaijan has increased not only between the candidates but also between the political parties, Head of the Political Scientists Club "South Caucasus" Ilgar Velizade said in an article published on "Rossiiskaya Gazeta" website.
According to the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan as of October 15, 1,246 candidates have been registered, 572 of which was nominated by parties, 62 – by "Azadliq-2015" election block, and three – by an initiative group.
The author of the article noted that though the preferred position of the "Yeni Azerbaijan" ruling party had in a certain degree reduced the competition, there still were interest from voters and participants.
Ruling party’s traditional allies were actively preparing for the election, the author said.
According to Velizade, the radical opposition cannot find a common language between themselves due to accusing each other of having links with the authorities.
Opposition in the country has lower support from voters due to all passed scandals and significant resignations. And that support will obviously further decrease, Velizade noted.
According to the author, the importance of the votes of youth, which are quite active and have some role in the development of political processes, will steadily be growing. That is why the opposition in the fight for the votes of young voters has repeatedly tried to create protests among the youth.
However, disappointment of youth activists in opposition’s activity and the differences in goals and preferences of young people didn’t allow them to be used as a driving force of the protest movement, the author said.
Guided by quite pragmatic considerations, today's young people prefer to rely on strong political structure or candidates, and that increases their role in the electoral process as a whole, according to Velizade.
