"The main threat to the security in the South Caucasus is the continued occupation of part of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia rather than Safarov's case."
The statement came from spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan Elman Abdullayev while commenting on the speech of the Armenian Foreign Minister, E.Nalbandian at the UN General Assembly.
"It is not the first time that the Armenian Foreign Minister voices such absurd statements from different high tribunes in an attempt to create conditions for protraction of negotiations and preservation of status quo", he said.
According to him, Nalbandian's statement that extradition from Hungary to Azerbaijan and the upcoming pardon of Azerbaijani officer Safarov threatens the security and stability in the South Caucasus can be perceived as nothing but absurd.
"It is not the first time that Nalbandian is making such statements, it seems that he is already used to them and is unable to go without them. It is quite clear that continued occupation of a part of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia is the main threat to security and stability in the South Caucasus.
No regional stability is at issue without the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the Azerbaijani territory", the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan said.
Abdullayev noted that occupation by Armenia is a threat to stability of not only the South Caucasus but also the neighbor countries. He voiced hope that this circumstance will be taken into account by the international community.
"I do hope that international organizations will voice their position on this issue including on such illegal actions of the Armenian side in the occupied lands as construction of an airport in Nagorno Karabakh", Abdullayev said.
