Political independence cannot exist without economic independence, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has said.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 19th international Oil and Gas exhibition in Baku, the head of state said Azerbaijan pursued a completely independent policy.

"One of the bases of perfect independent policy is the unity of government and people. And the other is economic development. We have expanded the routes of oil and gas exports and currently have oil and gas pipelines in seven directions. It enables us to prevent dependency on one route and conduct a completely independent economic policy. Azerbaijan's independence is perfect and unconditional."

The head of state stressed that those who once frightened Azerbaijan with one-sided economic development and Dutch syndrome now should admit that Azerbaijan's economy has expanded.

"Currently Azerbaijan's confirmed gas deposits make up 2.5 trillion cubic meters. Azerbaijan has big has reserves, which can be used for 100 years from now on."

President Aliyev added that oil reserves could be used for more than 50 years. This is because Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field has more oil than was forecast in 1994.

"We have reached a crucial point in the gas policy. The Azerbaijani gas has been presented to the world. At present, the Azerbaijani gas enters the world via four pipelines. Shahdeniz-2 project is ready for commission. Now we are developing our future strategy and this strategy is almost ready."

The head of state noted that if the present rate of oil and gas production is preserved, Azerbaijan will develop in next decades without problem.
