Azerbaijani FM makes remark in an address to the annual coordination meeting of the foreign ministers of the OIC
Elmar Mammadyarov has restated support for Palestinian independence and urged Muslim states to back Azerbaijan's bid for a UN Security Council seat.
Azerbaijan's foreign minister made the remarks in an address to the annual coordination meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The minister began by looking at globalization and current events in the world.
"Our globalizing world has been rapidly changing. Consequently the world order and the system of international relations are changing too. Political events that occur nowadays in different regions of the world can change the geopolitical picture of any given region. These events happen at such lightning speed that events go beyond the scope of powerful countries and therein lies the very nature of globalization," the Foreign Ministry press service reported Elmar Mammadyarov as saying.
The
minister said that some regions were highly sensitive to geopolitical
processes: "Recent political processes currently under way in the Near and the Middle East region have demonstrated to the international
community the fragility of peace and stability. Azerbaijan encourages all member
states to maintain their efforts to achieve the settlement of the conflicts in
the Islamic world based on the norms and principles of international law. We
remain concerned at the situation in Palestine.
Azerbaijan reiterates its
strong support to the brotherly people of Palestine
and their efforts to achieve peace and stability and to establish a sovereign
and independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and
fully support Palestine's
aspiration to be a fully fledged member of the United Nations."
He said that Azerbaijan
was deeply concerned at the humanitarian situation in fraternal Somalia,
describing the famine and drought there as an tragedy without precedent in the
past 100 years. "We have to realize the full potential of the OIC and
Muslim states to provide badly needed aid and assistance to prevent
humanitarian disaster in Somalia.
Azerbaijan
has already provided humanitarian aid to this brotherly country."
Mammadyarov
said that reform of the UN Security Council was of concern to all member
states: "The OIC has a legitimate demand for representation in the Security
Council to defend and promote the interests of Muslim countries. We support
comprehensive reform of the Security Council to make it more representative,
democratic, effective, transparent and accountable to UN Members.
"In this regard, I am pleased to inform my
distinguished colleagues that Azerbaijan
has put forward its candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security
Council for 2012-2013 in
the elections to be held in 2011 at the 66th session of the UN General
Assembly. Proceeding from the importance of representing the OIC in the
Security Council we rely on the continued support of the member states for Azerbaijan's
candidacy."
Elmar Mammadyarov also expressed Azerbaijan’s gratitude to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and OIC secretary general for their support for Azerbaijan's just cause in the ongoing armed conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh.
"Numerous
OIC decisions and resolutions on the aggression of Armenia
against Azerbaijan and
support of the OIC member states have been instrumental in addressing the
occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan by the international
community, in particular by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
"The government of Azerbaijan
remains committed to the peaceful settlement of this protracted conflict based
on respect for the norms and principles of international law, implementation of
the relevant UN Security Council and OIC resolutions as well as the appropriate
documents and decisions adopted by the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe, Council of Europe and
European Parliament."
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov also addressed a conference of foreign ministers of Turkic-speaking states in New York.
"Azerbaijan pays special attention to the Turkic world in its foreign policy and multilateral relations with Turkic-speaking states," he said.
The minister also met regional and Turkic leaders at a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence in New York.
