Car bomb hits Iranian embassy in Beirut

At least seven killed and as-yet-undetermined number of people were injured in the blast as ambulances rushed to the scene in the capital of Lebanon.

At least seven people were killed in a massive car bombing near the Iranian embassy in Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday. Eye witness accounts suggest death tolll might increase.

An as-yet-undetermined number of people were injured in the blast as ambulances rushed to the scene.

Several nearby buildings and vehicles were damaged by the blast.

No official statement has yet been issued on the attack.

Security forces immediately sealed off the site of the blast, which occurred in Beirut's Southern District, a stronghold of Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

The group had earlier tightened security at the neighborhood's entrances following two deadly blasts in August.

Support by Hezbollah and Iran for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's ongoing military crackdown on armed rebel groups has drawn condemnation from Sunni-Muslim quarters both inside and outside Lebanon.
