Azerbaijani Minister discusses ICT projects with Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS UNDP

Azerbaijani Minister of Communications and High Technologies Ali Abbasov has met with a delegation headed by Deputy Director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS Olivier Adam.

Minister Ali Abbasov congratulated the delegation on the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, as well as a group of UN employees awarded medal Tereggi (Progress) by the order of the President of Azerbaijan for effective activities in the implementation of projects in various areas in our country.

Saying cooperation with relevant UN agencies is highly appreciated by the government, the Minister said the UN-Azerbaijan relations are developing in various fields, including the ICT field, Ministry of Communications and High Technologies is implementing a number of ICT projects in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The Minister brought to the attention that the UNDP acts as a key partner in the preparation of National Strategy on Development of Information Society in Azerbaijan for 2014-2020, which plays the role of beacon, in particular for the future development of the IT sector, the development of e-governance, the creation of relevant platforms for organization of e-services, the organization of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and other areas.

Expressing his gratitude for warm reception on behalf of the delegation, Olivier Adam conveyed greetings from UNDP Administrator Ms Helen Clark to Minister Ali Abbasov.

Noting Azerbaijan’s incredible achievements in the field of ICT, the UN official said the experience gained in this direction could serve as a model for other member states, as well as expressed willingness of the UNDP in sharing these achievements with other countries, at the same time, appreciated Azerbaijan’s support to the development of e-governance in Afghanistan in cooperation with the organization.

Moreover, they exchanged views on current projects, including giving wider space for ICT projects in government programs for 2016-2020, continuation of cooperation for AzDataCom project within National E-Governance Network Initiative and so on.
