MCHT discusses new areas of cooperation with CERN

A delegation consisting of the heads of ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) at the CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) is on an official visit to Azerbaijan.

The Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT) held a meeting with a delegation headed by Professor Paolo Giubellino, spokesperson of ALICE project. During the meeting First Deputy Minister of Communications and High Technologies Iltimas Mammadov informed the guests about the work carried out in the field of high technologies by the ministry.

Noting nuclear technologies, nuclear science is a new direction for the MCHT, the First Deputy Minister said that Azerbaijan was interested in expanding international cooperation in this area and he also added that this cooperation will allow Azerbaijani scientists and students to participate in ALICE which functions at Large Hadron Collider.

At the same time, information was provided on Tier III level regional data center (Data Processing and Storage Center) built by MCHT. The use of the opportunities of the center at CERN was discussed, in particular the analysis and storage of data collected at data center from ALICE experiment.

Saying they were at the National Nuclear Research Center (NNRC) and the Data Center, Professor Paolo Giubellino praised the work done in a short period of time. Later, he informed about ALICE and noted that today it has 1550 members from 37 countries. According to him, in the ALICE experiment, you can get information about the existence of the universe about 14 billion years ago. To fulfill this mission, advanced technologies and computational approaches are used in the ALICE experiment. It includes, particularly installation of large computer networks and processing of large amounts of data. During the meeting the sides also discussed the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between ALICE experiment and National Nuclear Research Center.

Note that the meeting was attended by Professor Peter Braun-Munzinger, Chairperson of the ALICE Collaboration Board, head of the Ukrainian Group in the ALICE experiment, Professor Gennady Zinovyev and other officials.

The guests will also take part in a workshop to be organized by MCHT at Baku State University and designed for Azerbaijani scientists and students.
