Baku-bound Kjaesfeldt lost in Sudirman quarter finals

Line Kjaesfeldt and Sara Thygesen have lost the Badminton Sudirman Cup quarter finals.

In the final match of the women's doubles quarter-final tie with Japan, the Danish duo lost to Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi 19-21, 21-7, 21-19. That gave Japan a 3-2 victory over Denmark en route to the final, which they then lost to China.

Thygesen did give Denmark their first point in the Japan encounter, teaming with Mads Pieler Kolding to win mixed doubles. Viktor Axelsen and Kjaesfeldt lost in the men's and women's singles, respectively before Kim Astrup and Kolding won at men's doubles to set up the final chance for Kjaesfeldt and Thygesen.

The two women are the only two of the Danish team at the Sudirman Cup in Dongguan, China who will also compete at the Baku 2015 European Games - Kjaesfeldt in women's singles and Thygesen in mixed doubles with Niclas Nøhr.

Denmark failed to make the semi-finals of the biennial Badminton spectacle for just the fourth time in 14 events and for the first time since 2009. The Danes have never won the title though they secured second places in 1999 and in 2011.

The only other European team in the quarters was Germany, who appeared at the Sudirman Cup with no Baku-bound players and lost 3-0 to eventual champions China in the final eight. England and Russia both failed to get out of group play.
