Air pollution caused by car traffic were associated with changes of heart performance, researchers from the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle made the disappointing conclusion, Fox News reports with reference to Counsel and Heal.
"We were able to demonstrate for the first time that higher levels of exposure were associated with greater right ventricular mass and larger right ventricular end-diastolic volume. These changes can lead to the development of serious cardiovascular diseases, " noted lead author of the study Dr. Peter Leary.
For their study, researchers utilized cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the hearts of 3,896 people who were free of cardiovascular disease at the study’s onset. The scientists also determined the levels of nitrous dioxide outside the participants’ homes during the year before their MRI scans.
The results of the study showed, that because of the increased air pollution of the atmosphere by nitrogen dioxide, in average, right ventricular mass is increased by 1 gram (or 5%) and by 4.1 ml (3%) grows its end-diastolic volume.
Researchers think, that other factors could also have contributed to these results.
