More than 6,000 tourists and local residents were trapped in the Valle d'Aosta region in northern Italy due to heavy snowfall and an avalanche, SİA informs via Efe.
The agency notes that after the avalanche, the highway was cut and the road tunnel leading to the region was blocked. In some municipalities in the region, schools are closed, but power supplies are not interrupted and food supplies are sufficient.
An increased level of weather danger due to heavy snowfall has been declared in other regions of northern Italy - in particular in Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. At the same time, storm winds of up to 50 m/s and waves of up to five meters were recorded on the coast of the Ligurian Sea.
The weather conditios are also heavy in a number of other regions of Italy, including in Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania, Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria and on the island of Sicily, the agency said.
