Azerbaijan to add residence and citizenship information to IDs

The form of the identity card and the range of information on it are changing in Azerbaijan, SİA reports.

According to the report, this is reflected in the proposed amendment to the law "On the Identity Card of a Citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan" that was put to discussion at today's session of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament).

The amendment is proposed to bring the identity card of a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan into line with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard No. 9303, as well as to eliminate some difficulties that have arisen in the use of the identity card.

The identity card of a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan is also used as a travel document (in relation to Türkiye). The fact that the identity card does not reflect information about the person's address causes some difficulties in using the card. In this regard, it is necessary to make changes to the form of the identity card and the scope of information contained on it. Therefore, it is proposed to update the composition of the information reflected in the identity card. Thus, information on the place of residence and citizenship is added to the information specified in the identity card. At the same time, it is proposed to store only more necessary information on the electronic carrier (chip) compared to the previous version.

Another proposed change is that the citizen's marital status, parents, children, military service and other information will no longer be stored directly on the electronic medium, but through IAMAS (interdepartmental automated information retrieval system) and will be cryptographically protected. Cryptographic protection of information related to the identity card aims to ensure their confidentiality, integrity and protection from unauthorized interference.

The draft law also proposes changes to the rules for issuing the card.

Change of residence is added to the cases where the document must be replaced. In addition, if a technical or content error is detected in the card or electronic medium, the correction is intended to be carried out without charging a state fee.

Thus, these proposed changes will ensure that information related to the identity card is managed in more modern systems, securely and flexibly, as well as simplifying documentation procedures and services for citizens.

After discussions, the draft law was put to a vote and adopted in the third reading.
