Fire contained in Lachin district: Tourists suspected as cause

A wildfire that broke out in the mountainous and forested area near the village of Khochaz in the Lachin District has been successfully contained, authorities confirmed early Thursday. Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been sparked by the negligence of visiting tourists.

SİA informs that, according to Captain Ruslan Suleymanov, Deputy Chief of the Lachin District Department of the State Fire Protection Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the difficult terrain and presence of landmines in the area significantly hindered firefighting efforts.

“A mine explosion occurred at the scene due to the fire, which prevented personnel and equipment from intervening directly,” Suleymanov said. “Initial assessments indicate the fire likely resulted from a failure to observe fire safety rules by tourists in the area.”

The fire, which reportedly spread across approximately 10 hectares, was eventually localized through coordinated efforts by emergency response teams.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that the incident was first reported via its emergency hotline "112" at 22:08 on July 16. In response, firefighting units were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Swift and decisive action by firefighters allowed the blaze to be brought under control in a short period.
