Mobile operators to be allowed to use new frequency bands

Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MCHT) will allow the country’s mobile operators to use new frequency bands to expand their LTE network.

According to Iltimas Mammadov, First Deputy Minister of Communications and High Technologies, by the end of this year operators will be allowed to use part of 800 MHz frequencies in building LTE network.

"With this, we will create an opportunity for deployment of LTE technology throughout the country. 3G network has significantly expanded its coverage in the country’s regions. However, 4G network works only in Baku and some surrounding areas. We aim to use this technology mainly in remote mountainous regions, and provide the entire country with Internet access and communications," the Deputy Minister said.

According to Iltimas Mammadov, within the next two years the ministry is also planning to suspend GSM technology in Azerbaijan, which is no longer used in the world today.

"Platforms based on new 3G and 4G technologies are developing and now it is possible to use the Internet at the same time talking on a smartphone. We will soon witness the provision of voice services over LTE networks. Earlier this year, voice services over LTE technology were demonstrated at a conference in Barcelona. Most probably, its application in our country will be inevitable as the world’s mobile operators offer these services. Work is under way in this direction," said Iltimas Mammadov.
