Google Translate to work offline

The Google Translate app can reportedly translate text and speech between more than 60 languages. This is great if you have a good internet connection. But what if your internet connection is somewhat spotty? No worries, you can now use the app offline.

Google translate is a very useful tool. Although its translations are not perfect, it can rapidly help you to get your point across in another language. But up until now, to do so, you would need to be connected to the internet. Today’s update, version 2.6, changes that requirement by allowing you to down load language modules that can be used offline. It takes a little pre-planning however. The modules have to be downloaded while you still have an internet connection.

There are of course, a few caveats. The offline package only supports fifty languages; and the offline models are less comprehensive than their online equivalents. And although version 2.6 is applicable to users who run Android 2.1, the offline translation function is only available to users running Android 2.3 and above.
