EU to discuss restrictions on fresh fish imports from Russia

The European Union leadership is set to discuss imposing restrictions on the import of Russian fresh fish as part of a new package of sanctions against Russia. According to SİA, which cites Welt, on July 24, the Baltic states, particularly Lithuania, are insisting on the introduction of these new restrictions.

Lithuanian authorities claim that Russian fishing trawlers are conducting fishing activities in the country's territorial waters, prompting the push for sanctions. The discussions on measures against fish from Russia will commence in the European Commission after the summer recess, which lasts from late July to early September.

According to data from the European Fish Processors and Traders Association, Russia accounts for over 70% of the EU's pollock imports. In Germany, this figure reaches up to 85%, as reported by the country's industry association.
