MP: USAID, Voice of America and Radio Liberty harmed not only Azerbaijan, but also US

USAID, along with Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, adopted a stance that was detrimental not only to Azerbaijan but also to the West itself, including the United States, Azerbaijani MP Vugar Isgandarov told Report.

Isgandarov pointed out that recent statements and opinions expressed about USAID from across the ocean support Elon Musk’s accusation that the organization provided financial aid to terrorist groups:

“However, USAID’s activities go beyond this. According to some reports, there have also been instances of financial fraud within the organization. While advocating for ‘democracy,’ ‘freedom,’ and ‘transparency’ as a means to pressure independent countries, USAID was, in reality, assisting terrorist groups that target democracy. The organization, which constantly preaches transparency, was itself engaged in non-transparent financial operations.”

The MP further stated that Voice of America and Radio Liberty had long strayed from their original mission:

"These stations were originally established to counter Soviet propaganda, but after the collapse of the USSR, they adopted an entirely different approach. Falling under the influence of Western power centers, they became tools for smear campaigns against independent nations. Azerbaijan has repeatedly warned about their destructive activities, and now even the West acknowledges this. Under these circumstances, their continued presence in Azerbaijan was no longer viable."

On March 14, President Donald Trump signed an executive order significantly limiting the scope of the US Agency for Global Media and other government entities. This agency oversees both Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Voice of America.

Azerbaijan has officially notified the United States of its decision to suspend USAID’s activities within the country.
