Azerbaijan advances towards establishing National Standard Time

Efforts have commenced to establish the National Standard Time in Azerbaijan, according to the State Agency for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Supervision under the President, SİA informs.

Currently, time synchronization in Azerbaijan relies on various external sources and methods, increasing dependency on external systems and complicating accurate synchronization. This reliance poses risks of technical disruptions across sectors such as finance, logistics, and communication.

To address this, the Azerbaijan Institute of Metrology has undertaken significant initiatives. In line with the "2022-2026 Socio-Economic Development Strategy" approved by the President’s decree dated July 22, 2022, the institute has equipped its newly established Time and Frequency Measurements Laboratory with cesium atomic clocks and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers.

This technology plays a pivotal role in creating the National Standard Time (UTC-AZ). By measuring the time differences between atomic clocks in GNSS satellites and those in the laboratory daily, the data will be sent to the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), ensuring precise alignment with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

In the future, time synchronization across Azerbaijan will be facilitated through the NTP (Network Time Protocol) system installed in the laboratory, enabling the unified use of national time.

The project is set to be completed by the end of 2025. Its implementation is expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of various sectors in Azerbaijan, positioning the nation among countries with advanced time infrastructures on the global stage.
