Russian citizens are in the top three in terms of asylum requests in Armenia, SİA informs via the Armenian press.
According to the data from the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs, in 2025 (as of June 17), 209 foreign citizens requested asylum in Armenia. Most of them are from Iran, followed by Ukraine and Russia.
Foreign citizens seek refuge in Armenia due to the following issues, mainly: political persecution, religious pressure, as well as various personal reasons.
As noted, a small part of the hundreds of people seeking asylum in Armenia live in the only special shelter in the country. The special shelter is designed for 40 people, but there are more temporary residents. According to Asmik Danielyan, an official of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia, today 67 people live in the shelter, 56 of whom are asylum seekers and 11 have refugee status. Since they have minor children, they cannot be removed from the shelter by law.
