Türkiye stepping up activity in Middle Corridor as alternative to Strait of Hormuz

Türkiye is actively developing land and sea logistics routes to minimize the risks of a possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key transport artery for the export of oil and gas from the Persian Gulf countries, Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said in an interview with the Hürriyet newspaper, SİA informs.

"We need reliable alternatives in case the strait is blocked, so we are implementing the Development Road and Middle Corridor projects," the minister explained.

He noted that 2,100 km of the Development Road pass through Turkish territory, in which it is planned to invest about $24 billion. In parallel, the Trans-Caspian route "Middle Corridor" is being strengthened, where 2,200 km of the route also run through Türkiye. The construction of key sections of this route has already been completed.

Once the projects are fully operational, the delivery time for cargo to Europe via the Development Road route will be reduced to 25 days, and via the Middle Corridor to a record 13 days.

Known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, the Middle Corridor runs through the Caspian Sea and connects China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye and European countries. In 2024, the volume of cargo transported from China via the Middle Corridor increased more than 25 times compared to 2023, exceeding 27,000 containers.
