Sir Keir Starmer has insisted that Ukraine must be allowed to decide the terms of any peace deal with Russia in a challenge to proposals by Donald Trump, SİA informs via The Telegraph.
The prime minister contradicted Trump by saying that the “courageous” Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, was not to blame for the failure to strike an agreement ending the war.
Sir Keir also refused to back US plans to formally recognise Crimea as Russian in any negotiated settlement with Vladimir Putin, and demanded that Moscow agree to an “unconditional ceasefire.”
In an interview with The Telegraph aboard the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, he said: “We are at an intense stage in the negotiations.
“In the end, I’m always mindful of the fact that it is Ukraine that must decide on those issues – it’s not for other people to decide on behalf of Ukraine. It is for Ukraine to decide. And Russia must come to the table for that unconditional ceasefire.”
Sir Keir is continuing to push for US security guarantees for his “coalition of the willing”, under which Western troops would be based in Ukraine.
It was noted on Thursday that Britain had softened these plans, and now intended to send military trainers instead of a thousands-strong fighting force.
Intensive talks on the wording of a potential deal are continuing after a summit in London this week, with the US holding the pen on the text and Western allies lobbying for changes.
Details of a five-point set of demands from Kyiv have been shared with The Telegraph, revealing major differences still remain with America’s seven-point plan, which emerged this week.
At the center of the demands is an insistence that Crimea – Ukrainian land annexed by Putin’s forces in 2014 – is not formally recognized as Russian.
