"The European Union is interested in strengthening of relations with Azerbaijan", said the EU president Herman Van Rompuy in his speech at the Azerbaijan University of Languages.
The EU president said that Azerbaijan is a unique state from standpoint of geographical position. He also stressed the importance of achievement of peace and stability in the region and called the countries of the region "Not to be hostage of the history and together build a better future".
"The EU attaches a great importance to its eastern neighbors. Recently new European Neighbor Policy program has been launched and this program aimed to support the development of these countries. The EU doesn’t establish cooperation only at a level of economical cooperation, but we also attach a great importance to the civil society. The civil society plays a very important role in the development of democracy".
Herman Van Rompuy noted that the EU supports Azerbaijan in continuation and deepening of reforms: "We appreciate the efforts of Azerbaijan to improve condition in the sphere of human right and to develop democracy". Talking about the fact that Azerbaijan was selected as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council Herman Van Rompuy said that the EU highly appreciates the cooperation with Azerbaijan in several significant spheres.
