Azerbaijan's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013 will make a significant contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the world, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev told.
Abdullayev stated that Azerbaijan's victory is a historic diplomatic victory of Baku.
"We all are pleased with the country's victory at the UNSC. All Azerbaijani people may be proud of this victory and this shows how special our country is," Abdullayev said. "We believe our country is fairly well known and is recognized in the world. Azerbaijan is widely supported by the international community."
To be a member of such an authoritative structure as the UNSC is an honorable and important task for Azerbaijan, he believes.
"We thank all countries that have supported our candidacy and appreciate their trust," Abdullayev said.
