Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has sent a note of protest to Iran over what it described as "irresponsible slander" by Iran's chief of general staff.
The Iranian ambassador, Mohammad Baqer Bahrami, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday and presented with the note by Deputy Foreign Minister Nadir Huseynov.
The note expresses Azerbaijan's protest at "irresponsible slander" by the chief of general staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Maj-Gen Hassan Firouzabadi, published by Iran’s Fars News agency.
The note says that remarks directed against the people and state of Azerbaijan, its national interests and security, and which distort its domestic and foreign policy, contradict the friendship and mutual understanding between the countries and their mutual commitments.
The Foreign Ministry demanded that Iran prevent such tendentious statements being made against Azerbaijan in future, take relevant action in a short time to prevent anything similar happening in future and clarify the remarks made by the chief of general staff.
