Construction of a bridge over the transboundary Samur River can cost $40 million to the Azerbaijani and Russian sides-Ziya Mammadov

Construction of a bridge over the transboundary Samur River can cost $40 million to the Azerbaijani and Russian sides, Azerbaijani Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov told journalists on Tuesday.

"Azerbaijan offers a thorough reconstruction of the bridge, given that it will take less time," Mammadov said.

Mammadov said after long-term negotiations an agreement was reached on funding the construction of the bridge on a parity basis.

He said that $40 million is an estimated cost, and this figure is not final.

"For the reconstruction of the bridge, six months would be enough to carry out all necessary works after the decision is taken," Mammadov said.

In late June, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a law ratifying the agreement between Moscow and Baku, securing the line of the mutual land border from the point of junction of borders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to the Caspian Sea.

This line corresponds to the former administrative border between Dagestan SSR and Azerbaijan SSR.

The agreement was signed in Baku on Sept. 3, 2010. Russia became the first country with which Azerbaijan has signed an agreement on the state border.

The border land between Russia and Azerbaijan is 284 km.

Russian and Azerbaijani sides have agreed to synchronize the implementation of this agreement with entry into force of the inter-governmental agreement on cooperation in the rational use and protection of trans-boundary water resources of the Samur River, which was signed in 2010.
