Malta hope to build on Small States success at Baku 2015

Team Malta enters Baku 2015 looking to build upon its success at the recent Small States Games, where they collected four gold, nine silver and 18 bronze medals. That haul was an improvement over the GSSE result two years earlier when Malta amassed 25 medals - two gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze.

"The GSSE in Iceland was the climax of two years of sheer hard work," Malta Olympic Committee Director of Sport Mr Mario Micallef told the Times of Malta.

"Although there was a lot of scepticism on our medal chances, we always believed that the ones chosen all had good chances of making the podium in their sport. We finished with a good number of medals, perhaps more than we expected."

Mr Micallef was careful to manage expectations going in to Baku 2015, however.

"One must also keep in mind that we are nowhere near a finished product. We know that there is still a lot of work to be done in various aspects and different sports," he said. One area of concern he noted was the mental strength of the Malta team.

"There was more than one occasion during the (GSSE) when we saw our representatives collapsing under the pressure. So, definitely sports psychology should rank high on our agenda in the future," he said.

Malta will send 61 athletes to the European Games from seven different sports, including 36 from Athletics.
