Türkiye’s new Cabinet of Ministers to begin work no later than June 5
The new government of Türkiye will begin work no later than June 5, and a number of key ministers from the former Cabinet of Ministers can retain their posts, according to the Ekonomim newspaper on May 18, SİA informs referring to TASS.
Sources in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which is led by incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that after the first round of the presidential elections on May 14, the AKP began selecting candidates for the new government. Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, Minister of Environment and Urbanization Murat Kurum, and Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Bilgin are likely to retain their positions.
Earlier it was reported that Foreign and Interior Ministers Mevlut Cavusoglu and Suleyman Soylu may also remain in the government.
According to the results of the parliamentary elections, which were held on May 14 simultaneously with the presidential elections, 16 members of the Turkish government were elected to the parliament of the new convocation. The vast majority of them will continue to work as legislators.
The procedure for appointing ministers will begin after the central election commission approves the results of the second round of the presidential elections scheduled for May 28. This should happen on June 1. Within three days, the new president must take the oath and make appointments. No later than June 5, the new Cabinet of Ministers will take up its duties, the newspaper writes, expressing confidence that Erdogan will win in the second round. The same forecasts are voiced by pro-government publications and public opinion research centers close to the AKP. The opposition claims that its leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, will win the elections.
Ekonomim doesn’t rule out that Parliament Speaker Mustafa Sentop will be appointed vice president of Türkiye.
