A high-alert regime has been introduced in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city in Russia"s Kamchatka Krai in the country"s Far East, amid an increase in cases of bears entering the city, the city administration said, as quoted by SİA.
"Starting at 6:00 p.m. today, a high-alert regime is being introduced in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky urban district for forces and services involved in measures aimed at preventing threats to human life posed by bears entering the city," Kamchatka regional capital Mayor Andrey Vorovsky was quoted as saying on the city administration's website.
The city is stepping up controls over the prompt removal of garbage, while parents are advised to accompany their children to and from school. Residents are urged to remain vigilant.
According to Interfax, citing data from the regional government, hunters shot 11 bears last week alone following reports of the predators entering the city.
