Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed an obituary following the death of People's Artist Alexander Sharovsky, according to SİA.
Sharovsky, a People's Artist of Azerbaijan, director and actor, died at the age of 78. He had previously been hospitalized at the Central Clinical Hospital, where he was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
Sharovsky had been battling an illness for an extended period.
Alexander Yakovlevich Sharovsky was born in Baku on February 10, 1948. He began his artistic career in 1967 at the Azerbaijan State Young Spectator Theatre.
In 1976, he joined the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theatre named after Samad Vurgun, where he spent most of his professional career. He served as the theatre's chief director from February 1993.
Over the course of his career, Sharovsky performed more than 50 roles on stage, appeared in films and directed more than 50 theatrical productions. His directing credits included Summer and Smoke, A View from the Bridge, Filumena Marturano, The Last Attempt, Dear Pamela and Hello, I'm Your Uncle!, among others.
In 1998, Sharovsky was awarded the title of People's Artist of Azerbaijan. In recognition of his contribution to the development of the country's theatre arts, he was awarded the Sharaf and Shohrat orders.
