Astronomical autumn will begin in Azerbaijan at 04:05:08 Baku time on September 23, SİA informs, citing the Department of Astrophysics at Baku State University.
This moment is known as the autumnal equinox, when day and night are nearly equal in length and the Sun rises almost exactly in the east and sets in the west.
However, because of atmospheric refraction and the angular size of the Sun's disk, daylight does not last exactly 12 hours and is slightly longer than the night.
During its annual apparent motion, the Sun crosses the celestial equator from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere. From that moment, astronomical autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Days in the Northern Hemisphere then gradually become shorter, while nights grow longer.
In 2026, astronomical autumn will last 89 days, 21 hours, 45 minutes and 1 second and will end with the winter solstice on December 22.
At that point, astronomical winter will begin in the Northern Hemisphere and astronomical summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
