Poland Ambassador: Poland can be a strong representative of Azerbaijan’s interests in EU

Marek Calka, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Azerbaijan, has received the Caspian Energy’s delegation headed by President and Editor-in-Chief of Caspian Energy International Media Group Natalya Aliyeva.

Discussed at the meeting were different topics of cooperation within the framework of the Caspian European Club and Caspian Energy International Media Group as well as possibilities of expansion of contacts on the level of business communities of Azerbaijan and Poland.

"Poland sees Azerbaijan as a state-leader in the region of South Caucasus as well as a country which possesses a broad potential for development", Marek Calka emphasized.

During the meeting the Ambassador touched the issues of reformation of economy: "We are observing the economic modernization process of Azerbaijan with a kin interest. In this context, we highly assess President Ilham Aliyev’s recent order about liberalization of entrepreneurial activity, simplification of provision of permissions and passing of broad authority to ASAN Xidmet".

According to him, Poland can be a strong representative of Azerbaijan’s interests in Europe, especially in areas where these interests coincide. "It is very important as the doctrine of foreign policy of Azerbaijan includes a provision about integration into the European and Euroatlantic space. In our opinion, it would be rational to consider Azerbaijan’s entry into WTO as it would help to gain the most effective and economic indicators", he emphasized.

Apart from this the Ambassador said: "Our strategic interest lies in the fact that Azerbaijan maintains its stability, enters the European market with the best things that it can offer, ensures multivector development, establishes production in different areas since Azerbaijan is able to direct its revenues into the development of the national economy, creation of working places and development of education of its society".

Speaking about implementation of energy projects, the Ambassador noted that an agreement about construction of the interconnector between Poland and Ukraine was signed in January of this year. The feasibility study of the project was completed on October 19. "This connection is of importance in terms of integration of gas markets of the energy union countries as well as markets of the Central and Eastern Europe", he emphasized.

According to him, Poland fully supports diversification of directions and suppliers of both oil and gas to EU, so the Southern Gas Corridor is a part of this scheme as well". In this way, "we work for creating an energy union within the framework of EU", he thinks. It is important for Poland that every gas project, supplying resources to EU, operates in accordance with the European regulations.

In his opinion, the launch of the Southern Gas Corridor should be one of the priorities in strategy of diversification of gas supplies to the European Union. "This project is a part of efforts aimed at independence of the EU’s energy market from domination of one supplier. Balanced structure of gas import to EU has unambiguously a positive influence on sustainable operation of the union’s gas sector", he emphasized.

"In our opinion, the Southern Gas Corridor should not limit the capacities of gas import to EU from the Caspian region only. We should think how to use this route for gas supply to EU from the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean. Thereby, it is necessary to ensure safety of crude supply in accordance with legal principles of the EU", Marek Calka noted.

The Ambassador noted particularly that Azerbaijan is a hydrocarbon pillar of the Southern Gas Corridor. "We are confident in that and support your country so that you can successfully enter the European market. We are ready to lend assistance in this process", Marek Calka resumed.

At the end of the meeting Marek Calka gave an exclusive interview for Caspian Energy. During the interview the Ambassador touched the possibilities of development of bilateral relations, expansion of economic and investment cooperation, spoke about prospects of development of the energy market and touched the issues of development of the tourism sector and energy cooperation.
