According to the official website of the President of Azerbaijan, on 16 October in Baku, the Heydar Aliyev Center hosted XII Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed the summit.
"Thank you for having elected me chairman of the summit. I want to assure you that Azerbaijan, as chairman of the ECO, will do everything possible to further develop the organization, to work on specific projects so that the friendly and brotherly relations between the member countries further expanded.
I take this opportunity to express the Republic of Turkey, which for the past two years chaired the organization, and its leadership gratitude for the successful activities.
Once again I want to take this opportunity to thank all the member states supporting our fair position. Of course, the occupation and the injustice inflicted very big blow to our economy."
President noted that two years ago at the ECO summit in Istanbul Azerbaijan promised and pledged that it will become a shareholder of the ECO Bank.
"With a sense of satisfaction I can say that this is already a reality. Azerbaijan is already a shareholder in the Bank of ECO and for its part intends to actively participate in major infrastructure and economic projects in the member countries, both through the bank and as an investor. At present, Azerbaijan has started making its investments abroad. These investments are measured at billions of dollars. We are conducting research to expand into new markets. Of course, to invest we primarily appeal to those countries that are considered friendly and brotherly. I think that within the summit in the future as a result of joint work of delegations and ministers of economy, wider debates about the scope and scale of mutual investment can be held. We stand for it."
In his final speech the president noted that our solidarity, our common efforts will certainly bring us to new development, new achievements, the welfare of our peoples.
"We won’t be able to attain real independence without strong economy. It will be very difficult to create good living conditions without strong economic basis, serious economic reforms in the 21st century. One of the main goals of our organization is to encourage economic development in our countries. We feel proud of being a member of the OEC Bank.
Through this financial institution, we will play our role in our common development. Economic transformation is already a reality for Azerbaijan. Today our country is developing on very strong economic grounds. The share of private sector in gross domestic product tops 80%. In the coming years, our economic reforms will continue. The support of the member-states will be of big help to our development, improvement and rapid advancement.
I think that the current discussions will contribute to our common course. Today the member-states have again demonstrated their solidarity. The heads of states and governments, as well as delegations expressed their valuable thoughts about the future development of our organization on regional issues, touched upon the global problems and issues of concern. I am very happy and I would like to express my gratitude to the heads of the delegations for their valuable thoughts and ideas about the processes ongoing in the world, the region and our countries, since we are part of this world. The closer our unity is, the stronger will be the protection of our interests. I would like again to thank the member-states for the support to Azerbaijan in all international organizations on the basis of common interests and common trust. Our peoples have a great history, great culture and traditions.
Today we present our organization to the world as the organization which includes the countries supporting each other, demonstrating a political will on the international arena and protecting national interests. Undoubtedly, together we will be able to assist each other more than in separate. Our organization already has a long history, traditions, role on the world political map. I am sure that in the coming years we will all contribute to the future development of OEC.
In the coming years Azerbaijan, as the organization chairman, will do everything possible for further advocating of our values, strengthening of our partnership and contributing to the structure’s case on raising the level of mutual trade. Dear friends, I am glad to see you in our country. I do hope that you will enjoy the short period of your staying here. I do hope that we will meet you in the future. Thus, the agenda of the summit has come to an end. With your permission, I declare the 12th summit of OEC closed".
