Azerbaijan to present report on implementation of UN Convention on Rights of Child

The 59th session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is starting in Geneva today. On session agenda are reports of Azerbaijan, the Congo, Myanmar, Madagascar, Togo, Thailand, Cook Islands and Niue.

Azerbaijan, like other countries, will report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child was established in 1991 to oversee implementation of the Convention acceded by the 193 UN member states. Behind this international treaty are only two countries - Somalia and the United States.

The Committee includes 18 independent experts who use the authority of the international community due to their contribution to solving the problems of child protection.

The Committee also monitors implementation of two optional protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child: the first concerns the involvement of children in armed conflicts and the second one the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.

On 19 December 2011 the UN General Assembly approved a third optional protocol, which deals with communications procedures. The new document will enable the children to submit individual complaints about specific violations of their rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its first two Optional Protocols. Third Optional Protocol will be open for signature in 2012 and will enter into force after it is ratified by 10 member countries of the UN.
