55 Russian servicemen freed in prisoner swap

Igor Konashenkov, press secretary of the Russian Defense Ministry, said that as a result of the exchange of prisoners, 55 servicemen of the armed forces of the so-called Donetsk and Lugansk republics of the Russian army were handed over to Russia.

Igor Konashenkov reported on the exchange of soldiers captured in the war with Ukraine from February 24.

"The exchange was achieved as a result of difficult negotiations. On the night of September 21-22, 55 soldiers of the armed forces of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics of the Russian Federation, who faced the threat of death, returned from the territory of Ukraine under the control of the Kyiv regime. The freed prisoners were brought to Russia by plane and placed in the hospitals of the Ministry of Defense," Konashenkov stated.

The head of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushil, said that during the exchange of prisoners, 215 people, including nationalist fighters, were handed over to the Ukrainian side.

Out of 56 people handed over from Ukraine to Russia, 50 are from Russia and 5 from Donbas. In addition to them, Viktor, the chairman of the main pro-Russian opposition party, the Opposition Platform for Life, was detained after the start of the war in Ukraine and handed over in exchange for Medvedchuk.

Medvedchuk is known for his closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
