Documentary depicting crimes committed by France on Reunion Island screened

A short documentary film was presented in Baku depicting France's crimes in its colony Reunion with facts and witness testimonies.

The film was screened at an international conference titled "Independence of Reunion: A Look at France's Colonial Heritage and Path to Sovereignty," organized by the Baku Initiative Group.

It was noted that terrible crimes were committed in colonies like Reunion, especially by France's former president Michel Debre, who was nicknamed the "local Hitler."

It was mentioned that after 1960 France forced African-descent women on the island to have abortions. During that period, doctors from the colonial state lied to women, claiming they were performing different procedures while actually killing their unborn children.

In the film, witnesses emphasized that children separated from their families in Reunion were never returned home. They were made to work on farms and in various fields by the French government. Reunionese children were completely cut off from their roots and connections with their families.
