Greece to assume command of new EU mission in Red Sea

Greece will command the European Union's new naval mission in the Red Sea, SİA informs via Spain's El Pais.

A Greek commander will take charge of Operation Aspides (Shields), aimed at protecting European ships in the Red Sea. The mission's operational headquarters will be located on board the Italian ship.

According to the newspaper, the foreign ministers of EU member states will approve on February 19 the launch of an operation for a period of one year, which will involve four frigates.

The publication's interlocutors claim that EU ships will only respond to attacks from the sea and will not fire shots towards the mainland. The EU mission will be separate from the US-led Prosperity Guardian operation, but they will cooperate and share data.
