From this year, work is underway to amend the law to implement sign language interpretation (ed.: sign language) on state-funded television channels, said the Chairman of the Audiovisual Council, Ismat Sattarov, while answering journalists' questions at a briefing, APA reports.
He noted that a decision will be made after discussions in the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament): "Sign language interpretation is very limited in Azerbaijan. In the future, sign language interpretation may also be implemented on private channels."
Note that on February 5, an amendment to the "Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" was discussed at the meeting of the Milli Majlis's Labor and Social Policy Committee and recommended to the plenary session of the parliament. According to the draft law, the state ensures the right of persons with disabilities to access information. The Azerbaijani sign language is officially recognized as a communication language for persons with complete hearing impairment during the use of the Azerbaijani state language in oral form. State-funded nationwide terrestrial television broadcasters as well as having public broadcaster status, ensure that information-based programs broadcast during prime time are accompanied by Azerbaijani sign language interpretation. Sign language interpretation is carried out by persons with the appropriate education and qualifications. The state encourages the subtitling of audiovisual works.
