Today at 12:00 PM, a minute of silence was observed throughout Azerbaijan to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.
Ships docked at the Baku Sea Port and vehicles on the capital's roads sounded their horns, as the entire nation remembered the tragedy that befell the Azerbaijani people.
In the Baku Metro, a minute of silence was announced, accompanied by the sound of whistles from the trains.
On the night of January 20, 1990, by direct order of Mikhail Gorbachev, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, military units of the USSR Ministry of Defense, the State Security Committee, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs were deployed to Baku and several regions of Azerbaijan. The peaceful population was subjected to mass slaughter, fired upon with heavy equipment and various types of weapons. The occupation of Baku by special forces and a large contingent of internal troops of the Soviet army was accompanied by exceptional cruelty and unprecedented brutality.
Before the state of emergency was declared to the population, military personnel brutally killed 82 people and mortally wounded 20. After the declaration of the state of emergency, 21 more people were killed in Baku over the course of several days. In regions and cities where the state of emergency was not declared, 8 more people were killed - on January 25 in Neftchala and on January 26 in Lankaran.
Thus, as a result of the illegal deployment of troops, 147 people were killed and 744 were injured in Baku and the surrounding districts.
Among the dead were women, children, and the elderly, as well as ambulance workers and police officers. The illegal deployment of troops was also accompanied by mass arrests of civilians. During the operations, 841 people were illegally arrested in the capital Baku and other cities and districts of the republic, of whom 112 were sent to prisons in various cities of the USSR. Military personnel fired at 200 houses and 80 cars, including ambulances, and fires caused by incendiary bullets destroyed a large amount of state and personal property.
All the signs condemned at the international tribunal known as the Nuremberg Trials, held in 1945-1946, were observed in the actions of the Soviet troops.
In total, Azerbaijan has 150 martyrs of January 20.
