World needs to adapt to climate change - Azerbaijani official

The world needs to adapt to climate change, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Umayra Taghiyeva said at an international conference within the framework of Climate Action Week in Baku today, Trend reports.

“Adaptation plays a key role in the global climate agenda. The world is seeing elevated average temperatures, altered seasons, and a rise in extreme weather events, necessitating that nations and people adapt to climate change and respond effectively to its present and future consequences,” she said.

According to her, the adaptation can run the gamut from building flood barriers and setting up early warning systems to switching gears with drought-resistant crops, revamping communication systems, fine-tuning business operations, and overhauling government policies.

Taghiyeva pointed out that Azerbaijan is feeling the heat of climate change, just like the rest of the region: soil erosion, glacier melting, degradation of wetlands, rising sea levels, wildfires, and a reduction in water resources, along with decreased wind activity.

To note, Baku will host Action Week for the first time from September 30 to October 4, 2024. It will form the basis of the climate agenda ahead of COP29 in Baku in November.

The Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024) will bring together key stakeholders from a range of fields such as politics, finance, trade, investment, science, arts, culture, civil society, and media.

The main themes of the event are “energy transition," “cities and urbanized environments," “water security," “food and agriculture," "SMEs,” and “green skills.”

The first half of the week (from September 30 through October 2) will focus on climate solutions involving government agencies, academia, and the private sector. The second half (October 3-4) will focus on science, education, arts, culture, and other sectors.
