Macron’s unilateral stance undermines France’s fundamental principles of equality
French President Emmanuel Macron’s unsuccessful and unilateral statement in favor of Armenia during his recent TV interview not only violates the fundamental principles of international norms, but clearly serves to undermine France’s role as an impartial mediator in stabilizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, SİA informs referring to an article in Causeur.
Such statements by the head of the country, which is one of the leaders of the EU and is closely connected with the mediation process, cast a shadow on European efforts to involve Baku and Yerevan in direct negotiations on a peace agreement.
“It is not surprising that in Azerbaijan this statement was perceived not as ‘new evidence of French bias,’ but as an insult to the feelings of Azerbaijanis, for whom the conflict led to thousands of civilian casualties,” the article notes. Not surprisingly, as a result, the Azerbaijani president rejected France’s future mediating role in the peace process.
Thus, the French president’s ill-conceived and clumsy statements have not only damaged France’s position in the South Caucasus, but also undermined the fundamental principles of ‘equality’ that the country has always lauded.
At a recent meeting of a coalition of European NGOs in Geneva on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council the creation of conditions to promote direct dialogue between Azerbaijanis and Armenians was discussed, and, among other things, the parties spoke about the tragedy of Khojaly. They appealed to French President Macron to take on the role of a truly neutral mediator, the article says.
To start a sustainable peace process, it is more than necessary that the Armenian government take a bold step and break the taboo around Khojaly, coalition representatives say. In their opinion, France, through its president, should encourage Armenia to recognize the seriousness of this crime committed by previous governments and contribute to the establishment of the truth.
“By doing so, you will not only restore the impartial position of France and its prestige in the South Caucasus region, but also restore the trust of the peoples of this region in what you call ‘our values and our principles’,” NGO representatives said in an address to the French leader.
